Michael has been my therapist for a little less than a year and helped me accomplish what I thought was impossible. When I first met him, I was agoraphobic and could hardly leave my house. It was devastating; I couldn’t make a decision to save my life. But after meeting him, I am now in school pursuing a Master’s degree.
He has been instrumental in helping me realize my potential and in reaching my goals. Although we still have a lot of work to do, my life is improving immensely in just a short amount of time and my world is getting better and better with his help.
Thank you so much, Michael.

What’s the difference between individual psychotherapy and life coaching?
Some clients I work with are skilled adventurers. They have charted their course, know the terrain, and are exploring what lies ahead. But…we all struggle from time to time. Perhaps you have momentarily fallen short of your path or have some slight apprehension about going forward.
Life coaching is very much a constructive and directive approach toward whatever life situation lies ahead. Obviously not all frustration, anxiety, and stress are deeply rooted. Thus, some short-term counsel can help you through a particular hurtle.
Life coaching is somewhat different from therapy. Certainly both involve a collaborative engagement and both have attention on resolving a conflict. But life coaching is more of a guided-goal-oriented approach towards your journey. Where therapy is more exploratory, interpretive, and existential, life coaching is mores specific, directive, and practical. In regards to your life, it is more about the what rather than the why.
Some clients are stuck in how to organize their day or how to create a functional schedule. Others have difficulty in sticking to a goal like a budget, diet, or another personal discipline. Some struggle setting limits with others and themselves. And some look for the extra social support to keep them in their groove. Life coaching is helpful for all clients that feel disoriented in life’s whirlwind.
Life coaching allows you to build a sound sense of confidence. By seeing yourself accomplish specific objectives that you lay out, it evidences what you are capable of and initiates more of your possibility.
What do you offer as a supervisor?
Congratulations! You’ve made it this far toward your degree and licensure! All that hard work paid off. Now… starts the next steps toward your independent license! The light toward your LICSW might seem dim, but, wow, does it sneak up on you.
As an LCSW, most pursue that “I” as it opens a lot of doors. Whether you are eager to start your own private practice, need to get those other insurance panels, or need that salary “jump,” having your own supervisor makes the difference.
Some workplaces offer supervision as a courtesy or as a “benefit” toward your professional advancement. However, these same businesses can stipulate you must stay on longer as an employee. This can sometimes get in the way of your own career endeavors.
Additionally, most clinics have unreliable supervisors with inconvenient schedules. Some clinics have a high roll-over rate with staff. And some veteran social workers’ clinical skills have stagnated, or they have lost their passion.
As your supervisor, you will have the opportunity to hone in on your clinical skills, discover your niche, find your passion, and process your own “stuff” as you work with a variety of clients. You will have the opportunity to contemplate the prospects of a private practice, and, as an added benefit, work on “what will be on the test.”
Not the easiest road to follow
Social work is a rich, diverse, and life-altering vocation, but it is also heartbreaking, uncomfortable, and disappointing. Having a supervisor who is not restricted to your work’s hours allows an opportunity to sift through these complicated and contradicting inner experiences.
Perfectionism and completion are delusions. Just because you gain your independence to practice does not mean you won’t need further guidance down the road. Once you have achieved your independent license, you will always have the opportunity for continued mentorship and counsel as your career continues. What we do is hard work and having someone to unburden and examine your own frustrations matters.
Time is ticking!
